Gymnocalycium stenopleurum is a spherical cactus from the cactus family (Cactaceae) and belongs to the genus Gymnocalycium, also known as the “Chin cactus”. This species originates from Paraguay and is known for its distinctive ribbing and colorful flowers. The plant usually forms a single, flattened spherical shoot with a diameter of around 8 to 12 cm. The epidermis is dark green to greenish-grey, with narrow, clearly defined ribs - hence the name “stenopleurum” (Greek: “narrow rib”). The areoles are small and whitish, with short, curved spines emerging from them, which are usually light to brownish in color. In spring to summer, beautiful, funnel-shaped flowers appear in pale pink to light purple, often with a lighter center. The flowers are large in relation to the plant and open during the day in sunlight. Care instructions: Light: Prefers sunny to semi-shady locations. Direct sun promotes flower formation and compact growth. Temperature: Ideally between 20-30 °C. Overwinter in a cool (5-10 °C), but frost-free place. Substrate: Well-drained cactus soil, preferably with the addition of pumice, sand or lava granules. Water: Water moderately during the growing season (spring to fall) - allow the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Keep dry in winter. Fertilization: About once a month with cactus fertilizer during the growing season. Special features: Compact growth habit, perfect for windowsills or balcony boxes Beautiful, large flowers in spring/summer Undemanding and ideal for beginners in cactus care Can grow in the same pot for a long time Handmade and painted planter made of breathable and water-absorbent clay, fired at a high temperature for long-lasting color.
