Echeveria ‘Heart's Choice’ is a small succulent that grows in a compact, mostly solitary rosette of fleshy, gray-green leaves. Bumps form on the upper side of the leaves, which become more prominent with age and sometimes cover the entire leaf. The plant is quite variable, especially with regard to the size and shape of the bumps on the leaves. As the rosette matures, it can reach a diameter of up to 15 cm (6 inches) and form a number of offshoots. In spring, the rosette forms clusters of bell-shaped, pink-red flowers on arching stems that extend well beyond the rosette. Growing and caring for Echeveria 'Heart's Choice' Light: Echeveria 'Heart's Choice' requires full sun to partial shade for optimum growth. Therefore, place it near the brightest window in your home. If you move the plant outdoors in spring, do so gradually and avoid intense afternoon sun. Soil: A fast-draining soil is most important for growing a healthy succulent. Many gardeners prefer to make their own soil mix, but commercially available soil mixes for succulents are also suitable. Temperature: High temperatures are not a problem as long as there is plenty of fresh air, but Echeveria ‘Heart's Choice’ is a tender succulent and needs to be brought indoors if it is in danger of freezing. It thrives best with average winter minimum temperatures of -1 to 10 °C (30 to 50 °F). Watering: During the growing season, this plant prefers the “soak and dry” method. Water thoroughly and then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. In winter, water sparingly, only enough to prevent the plant from shriveling. If you have a saucer under the pot, don't forget to drain off the excess water. Fertilize: Although Echeveria ‘Heart's Choice’ grows well without fertilizer, it can benefit from additional nutrients. Fertilize only during the growing season and use a water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength. Repotting: If you are growing the plant in a container, you should repot it in spring or early summer as required, making sure that the soil is dry beforehand. Always use a container with drainage holes. Propagation: Echeveria 'Heart's Choice' can be propagated by leaves during the growing season. Toxicity of Echeveria 'Heart's Choice' Echeveria 'Heart's Choice' has no known toxic effects and can be grown safely around children and pets.
