Echeveria 'Dondo' is a succulent that forms dense rosettes of gray-green leaves that are widest near the leaf tip. The rosettes can grow up to 10 cm (4 inches) in diameter. The leaf tips are sometimes colored red and have a small, soft spine. The flowers are bell-shaped, dark yellow to slightly orange and appear in late winter to spring on several stems in the center of the rosette above the foliage. Cultivation and care Most common Echeveria species are not complicated succulents if you follow a few basic rules. First of all, make sure that there is no water in the rosette, as this can cause rot or fungal diseases that will kill the plant. Also, remove dead leaves from the bottom of the plant as it grows. These dead leaves provide a haven for pests, and Echeverias are susceptible to mealybugs. As with all succulents, careful watering habits and plenty of light contribute to success. Repot as required, preferably during the warm season. To repot a succulent, make sure the soil is dry before repotting and then carefully remove the pot. Tap off the old soil from the roots and remove any rotten or dead roots. Treat any cuts with a fungicide. Most Echeverias can be easily propagated from leaf cuttings, but a few are better propagated from seeds or stem cuttings. To propagate a leaf cutting, place the individual leaf in succulent soil and cover the tray until the new plant sprouts.
