Astrophytum asterias, also known as sand dollar cactus, starfish cactus or sea urchin cactus, is an unusual, small and thornless cactus originally from Texas and northern Mexico. The plant has a flat, round body with usually eight ribs and is covered with white dots (trichomes) that reflect sunlight and reduce water loss. Striking yellow flowers with an orange center appear in spring and summer. Care instructions: Astrophytum asterias prefers full sun to partial shade, well-drained cactus soil and only moderate watering. The substrate should dry out completely between waterings. The plant is sensitive to frost and should be brought into the warm at temperatures below 5 °C. In winter, watering sparingly is crucial to avoid root rot.
